Some six kilometers north of Nerja right at the foot of the Almijara mountain range sits Frigiliana. It is an old village of Moorish origin with narrow streets lined with white houses in several stories. The village overlooks the fertile Frigiliana valley famous for its tasty avocado. The valley is actually so mild all year round that banana and mango trees can grow in some of its most sheltered corners.
Despite the fact that Frigiliana is very popular among tourists it is a remarkably relaxed and cool village and not at all expensive. Frigiliana is a nice place just to stroll around in among its many small shops and restaurants but it is also an excellent starting point for a mountain hike. Several marked trails set out from there and if you don’t want to walk by yourself you could always find a group to join that has a professional trail guide.
It is also great fun to walk in and alongside the river Higuerón on its way towards Nerja and the Mediterranean Sea, the first part involves walking in a narrow ravine. It is an exciting and quite spectacular walk without being neither especially strenuous nor risky. But there are several other walking routes between Nerja and Frigiliana. One is through the Frigiliana valley, and yet another runs practically in a straight line from Nerja to Frigiliana passing through plantations and settlements, and then there are numerous combinations and variations picking and choosing from all of the mentioned alternatives. I can also recommend a walk from Frigiliana to Torrox over the hills. Torrox is another of those picturesque Andalucían villages that there are so many of and it is certainly worth the effort walking there.
